Further research has shown that in terms of trading Pokémon, the distance between the caught Pokémon yielded a difference in Candy XL drop rates.

Tip: If both trainers are looking for Candy XLs and have the same Pokémon - do mirror trades first for Pokémon with low levels since the rates are already very low, then transfer if you are not satisfied with the new IVs!
Guaranteed Methods
Look out for certain events or seasonal bonuses where trading or transferring Pokémon may provide guaranteed Candy XL rewards.
Outside of special ocassions however, trading Pokémon at any time where the distance between is at least 100km will guarantee a Candy XL.
Tip: Use the filter 'Distance100-' in your Pokémon storage to find Pokémon that have been caught at least 100km away from your current location!
